In South Africa, most people take their long holiday over the December period. Many people, however, need a break after the first five or six months of the year and many schools are closed for a few weeks during winter. Here are a few great places to go to this winter:
Tiffendell Ski Resort
What better way to spend winter than in a ski resort that could potentially get snow? Not only does Tiffendell Ski Resort offer warm, cosy accommodation but there are also a number of family-orientated activities to keep everyone busy, such as:
- A games room,
- Board games,
- Tobogganing, and
- Snowman building.
This resort is about an hour and a half’s drive from Rhodes in the Eastern Cape Province. It was also voted number 18 in CNN Travel’s “World’s Best Ski Runs” in 2014.
This picturesque town in the Western Cape is renowned for whale watching. There are also a number of other activities such as:
- Sandboarding in the nearby Betty’s Bay,
- Zip lining,
- Boat trips,
- Canopy tours,
- Cycling, and
- Clay pigeon shooting.
The benefit of going to Durban during the winter is that it’s not as cold when compared to other parts of the country, especially if you live in Gauteng or Sutherland. If your kids are into surfing they will be thrilled to know that the Ballito Pro surfing competition takes place during the last week of June until the first week of July. There are also a number of activities to enjoy such as:
- Flea markets,
- Holiday programmes that take place on the beach,
- uShaka marine world, and
- Segway tours of Moses Mabhida Stadium.
