March and April are usually filled with long weekends and of course, the Easter holiday. This is the perfect time of year to take a road trip with your friends, family or loved ones. Here are some of the best road trip destinations for your Easter holidays:
- The Garden Route
The Garden Route in the Western Cape is renowned for its picturesque scenery, pristine forests and beautiful landscapes. It consists of a 200 km stretch that passes through Knysna, Mossel Bay and Plettenburg Bay. If you enjoy hiking, mountain biking or camping, then this is the ideal road trip destination. Be sure to check out the guided tours to see the elephants near Knysna. And, if you’re a bit more adventures, why not bungee jump off the Bloukrans Bridge!
- The Waterberg
The Waterberg region in the Limpopo province is much closer for people who live in Gauteng. A mere three hours’ drive can take you to one of the best regions for wildlife viewing and bushveld living. You can find everything from unusual crafts shops to top notch lodges. Some of the highlights include the exclusive Welgevonden Game Reserve and the beautiful Marakele National Park.
- Johannesburg North (Beer Route)
For those of you who don’t want to travel too far this Easter, there is an impressive Beer Route that stretches from Johannesburg to the North West. You will be able to stop by a number of microbreweries or try out the authentic South African Buchu Beer at Ale House. Read about this writer’s Beer Route experience in the Getaway Magazine and please drink responsibly.
- Route 62
Route 62 in the Western Cape will take you through the Cape Winelands, dainty rural towns, the heart of the little Karoo and through striking mountain passes. This route isn’t as popular as the Garden Route yet, but it is quickly gaining popularity among both locals and tourists.
