DIY Car Maintenance Tips to Save You Money!

Whether you have applied for car finance while you have a bad credit record, or whether your credit record is in a healthy standing, one thing will always be true: keeping your car in tip-top condition will save you money and keep it running beautifully. Neglecting to take care of your car’s basic maintenance is a big no-no! Worse, it can lead to expensive servicing costs if you’re not careful!

Many car finance deals will stipulate that you take your vehicle to an approved RMI dealership for its services. While this is a great idea as it ensures high-quality workmanship, there are some simple things you can do yourself to maintain your car. Here are a few maintenance tips to ensure that your vehicle is kept in the best shape possible:

  • Prevent your car from overheating

Your car’s engine needs to be kept cool and well lubricated to ensure that it doesn’t overheat. An overheated engine can result in all kinds of expensive damage such as a blown gasket! It is easy to check your radiator water: just open the bonnet, locate the radiator, unscrew the cap and fill it with water – regularly.

At least once a month, check the oil. The oil cap will have a dipstick attached to it. Pull the dipstick out, wipe, replace, and then take it out again to check the oil level. If you notice that the oil is low, simply top it up with a well-known brand motor oil that you can buy from your local petrol station.

  • Change Your Air Filter And Spark Plugs

Once a year, your vehicle’s air filters and spark plugs will need to be changed. If you buy the parts from your local auto repair shop and follow the instructions carefully, you really can do this yourself. Does this sound way too difficult? It’s not actually, but if you are not technically minded, you can always request that this is done as part of a yearly vehicle service.
